Bismarck, ND – The North Dakota Parks and Recreation Department (NDPRD) is seeking trail project applications for the Recreational Trails Program (RTP) starting Tuesday, April 1, 2024.
The RTP is an 80/20 matching grant program that provides funding for both motorized and non-motorized recreational trail projects. The RTP is administered at the state level through the NDPRD and federally through the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).
Examples of eligible RTP projects include the construction of new recreation trails, restoration of existing trails, development and rehabilitation of trailside and trailhead facilities and trail linkages, purchasing and leasing recreational trail construction and maintenance equipment, land acquisition, and trail accessibility assessments. The following entities are eligible and are encouraged to apply:
- Cities, counties, and townships
- Park boards and park districts
- State and federal agencies
- Registered non-profit organizations
- Federally recognized tribes
NDPRD aims to continue maximizing RTP grant opportunities to improve access to quality trails, maintain and expand trail networks, and support sustainable outdoor recreation across the state. By fostering partnerships, enhancing trail safety, and prioritizing environmental conservation, NDPRD hopes to ensure that future generations can enjoy diverse and accessible outdoor experiences for years to come.
Project applications should be submitted through Web Grants on the NDPRD website at https://grants.nd.gov/index.do. The final date to submit project applications is April 13, 2025. Letters for pre-award notification will tentatively be sent out to applicants in May. Projects will have approximately a 9- to 12-month application processing period before funds are granted by NDPRD.
