Trinity Health’s efforts to build a hospital in Southwest Minot cleared a hurdle in the form of a zoning change and the issuance of conditional use permits needed to move the process forward. The Planning Commission’s recommendations will go the full City Council next Monday. Trinity’s news release follows below.

Trinity Health will take another step toward constructing a new hospital and medical campus in southwest Minot as it goes before the Minot Planning Commission later today. Trinity has filed a request to rezone 43.48 acres from agricultural to general commercial to accommodate the new construction, which will be located west of the Minot Family YMCA along 37th Avenue.
Dave Kohlman, Vice President-Facilities, says Planning Commission members will get an initial look at detailed plans for the approximately 840,000-square-foot center. It calls for a connected six-story hospital and clinic building, along with a spacious three-story facility for Behavioral Health Services.
“This past year has been an intensive planning period,” Kohlman said. “Working with our partners, TEG Architects, we’ve come up with an excellent design that optimizes space, improves patient flow and increases efficiencies throughout the new buildings. Once completed, this project will ensure that future generations in our region have access to the highest quality of care, close to home; and the new location will offer far more convenience and accessibility for residents.”
The new multi-million-dollar complex fulfills a longtime goal of Trinity Health to design a modern, up-to-date care system for the region. Plans call for a total of 208 beds throughout the center, including 157 nursing beds, a 20-bed Intensive Care Unit and an Emergency/Trauma Center with 27 treatment bays. The site area covers 76 acres and will include ample parking of over 1,900 spaces.
“We expect this project will have a significant economic impact on the region, including jobs for electricians, builders, plumbers and workers in other trades,” Kohlman said. “Without a doubt this will be one of the largest private industry construction projects in Minot’s history.”
To manage the construction process, Trinity Health has selected Mortenson Construction, Minneapolis, as general contractor. Mortenson is a leading builder of healthcare, sports and cultural facilities in the U.S., with projects that include the new Minnesota Vikings stadium in the Twin Cities, the Alerus Center in Grand Forks and the newly constructed Sanford Medical Center in Fargo.
Trinity officials expect to break ground on the medical park next spring. In the meantime, Kohlman says preliminary work will continue this fall and into the winter months.
