Cedar Rapids is a great comparison community for Minot. It suffered a devastating flood in 2008, and many of the steps they’ve taken, Minot has mirrored. It’s a little like looking into the future. And what’s Cedar Rapids focusing on now? Turning the riverfront into a community asset.
They’ve already completed a community gathering space and event amphitheater. There are plans for a Roundhouse Park, and they want to do more.
There’s one quote from the story that’s worth calling out, “You don’t often get the chance to reprogram 130 acres in the middle of your city. This is a huge opportunity for Cedar Rapids.” That’s the sentiment of Cedar Rapids Councilmember Tyler Olson, Chair of the Cedar Rapids Flood Control Committee.
