It started early and it’s still going; I’m talking about flood season and flood season media coverage across the country. In Minnesota, they’re asking the questions about what it really means to be in a 100-year flood plain if the water comes every few years.
Whether it’s nature that’s changing or some form of observation bias, those with ears open can’t help but hear the noise that’s being created by water and all its many challenges. That noise does seem to be growing.
While it’s hard to consider ourselves lucky as a result of our 2011 flood, perhaps going early in a possibly growing cycle of natural disasters will leave us positioned to better weather future storms. With NAWS funded and advancing and flood protection making progress, Minot is on the way to becoming as secure as we can be to a re-emerging wildcard in the fate of communities — water.
