West Fargo residents can now apply for permits to keep chickens in their backyard, following the approval of a new ordinance. While some are concerned about potential issues like attracting predators and messy yards, others believe it’s a positive move in line with other nearby cities. The ordinance will require an annual permit for up to six chickens, kept in a coop set back from neighboring properties. The ordinance was passed with a 3-2 vote.
Why does this matter in Minot? There have been two attempts in recent years to see a similar ordinance passed. Since the last effort, we’ve seen more cities adopt these policies as well as increased volatility in egg prices and food supply. Is it time for Minot to revisit a policy that allows families to have greater food and economic resilience?
And what role does the recent emergence of a bird flu outbreak have in the conversation?
