On this day in 31 BC, the Battle of Actium took place, where the fleet of Octavian (the future Roman Emperor Augustus) defeated the combined forces of Mark Antony and Cleopatra. This decisive battle led to the end of the Roman Republic and the rise of the Roman Empire.
