School phone policies needed, but not a state ban (news and an editor’s commentary on the topic)

In Bismarck, a new debate centers on the ringing and pinging interruptions that cellphones bring into classrooms. Representative Jim Jonas has pitched a bill to limit student cellphone use, aiming for better focus and mental health. While some educators see the merit, arguing for local control, the proposal faces mixed reviews. Exemptions are being discussed, like for health monitoring. As state education leaders deliberate the pros and cons, the conversation about balancing technology and learning continues to buzz.

If they’re passed, then they are ignored for a long time while they shape they way we think and act. Then someone dredges them up again in the future and we repeat the process.

It’s a worthy topic and one — whatever we do – we shouldn’t let dry for long. The information we’re just discovering on the way phones and social media are shaping us is moving fast and deserves a little more ongoing legislative attention then the typical set it and forget it method.
