She was a citizen and entitled to equal protection of the laws and to deal with trade on equal terms with anyone else, and yet she finds that because of her color she is not wanted in a hotel, where white people constitute the total patronage, save in such rare instances as hers. It all suggests that the inference that much of our boasted equality is a myth, even with ourselves and that the color line does not have to be drawn — it draws itself. As to a remedy for her grievance, it is not easy to suggest one.

Why We Chose It
This was a principled position squarely on the side of humanity and decency. Kudos to the Bismarck Tribune for taking it; kudos to to The Ward County Independent for standing up with them. We are still wrestling with this today — seeing people as labels rather than people.
