On This Day | September 16

On this day in 1620, the Mayflower set sail from Plymouth, England, carrying 102 passengers who would become some of the first settlers of the Plymouth Colony in what is now Massachusetts. This journey marked a significant event in American colonial history.

On this day in 1810, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a Catholic priest, issued the Grito de Dolores (Cry of Dolores), calling for Mexico’s independence from Spanish rule. This event is celebrated as the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence.

Put Yourself in Their Shoes

“Look over the street your store and home is on and see if it is the kind of a street that a stranger would like to find himself on every day and night and examine especially the town life during those many hours and see if the spirit of your town expressing itself in the town’s doings, is the kind of town spirit that would make you want to live here.”

First Class Education Wanted For Minot

“`
Wanted: A First Class High School

We are now ranging with Drayton, Pembina, Hunter and other older cities as second class high schools. This shows that considerable progress has been made during the last two or three years, but the aim of Minot should be to attain a first class standing among our state educational institutions. How may this be accomplished?
First: Let the teachers be given such salaries as will encourage them to make themselves worthy of the confidence of the public. This could be done by practicing greater economy in other directions, and no town looks into this matter sanely unless it sees that its educational work is of paramount importance, conceding this, the public school teacher who generally and self-sacrificingly gives himself to the work of education should rank among the highest salaried men of the city.
Second: The public must demand from the teachers honest, earnest and competent work. The teacher should feel that he is not employed to “fill” in hours’ work, but to umpire the children with high educational ideals and train them in that direction. This grade of work we believe we are now receiving from Prof. Wolf and his staff.
Third: The high school scholars, many of them now at the age of manhood and womanhood should view squarely the matter of education and seeing its supreme value among men today religiously resolve not to allow themselves to be turned aside from the work in hand by any financial or social consideration, until they at least have graduated from the present institution. This would greatly help the teachers in their work.
Fourth: The parents should conscientiously cooperate with the instructors in seeing that no kind of an excuse on the part of the child will keep him from his school duties. Attention, we believe to these four matters will give us a first class high school.
