On This Day | September 15

On this day in 1916, tanks were used for the first time in warfare during the Battle of the Somme in World War I. The British Mark I tanks helped to break through German lines, marking the dawn of mechanized warfare.

On this day in 1963, a bomb exploded at the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, killing four African American girls. The attack, carried out by white supremacists, was a pivotal moment in the Civil Rights Movement and highlighted the violent resistance to desegregation.
