Where to Put Minot State
“While the South hill interests and the North side interests are scrapping for supremacy, the state looks on and wonders what it is all about.”
The Ward County Independent, September 14, 1911
The Fastest Growing Town in the West
“Minot is, without a doubt, the fastest growing city in the west. Building Inspector Moon reports that permits for building 406 residences in Minot have been issued this year and the building season will not end for some time. Every one of these houses is occupied or will be occupied by the time they are completed and hundreds of people are on the waiting list, hoping to become residents of our city just as soon as they can find homes.”
The Ward County Independent, September 14, 1916
The Fly in the Soup
WHY LOW PRICE FOR WHEAT
We do not pretend to pose as an expert on the raising and marketing of wheat, and have no cut-and-dried opinion as to why the price this year is declining below the actual cost of production, let alone a reasonable profit. There are varied and different reasons and explanations advanced, but even experts do not agree. Simply observing as a layman we find it difficult to understand why this great staple industry of the nation must work under such tremendous handicap, with the balance of probability nine times out of ten being against the farmer doing little more than getting back what he has put in, in time, money and labor. We find it hard to believe that there is any deliberate concerted attempt to rob the farmer of the fruitage of his labor, but somehow the conviction is being established that he is not exactly getting a square deal. Why, with everything else in the shape of natural causes to contend with, with the element of chance looming always before him, must the farmer also have to contend with that “invisible power” that dictates and determines what compensation he shall receive for his products? It is not entirely “Supply and Demand” that fixes wheat prices. Of that we are absolutely certain. There is no reason under high heaven that makes a bushel of wheat that will bring $1.00 today worth only 90 cents tomorrow. Just where and how the “fixing” is done we do not know—but it is done, and we are going to try and find out.—Cando Herald.
