On This Day | September 11

On this day in 1941, ground was broken for the construction of the Pentagon, the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense, which would become one of the world’s largest office buildings and a symbol of American military power.

On this day in 2001, the United States experienced devastating terrorist attacks when hijacked planes crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and a field in Pennsylvania, resulting in nearly 3,000 deaths and leading to significant changes in global security and foreign policy.

On this day in 1973, a military coup in Chile led by General Augusto Pinochet overthrew the democratically elected president, Salvador Allende, resulting in a long and brutal dictatorship that lasted until 1990.
