On This Day | October 8

On this day in 1871, the Great Chicago Fire began, devastating the city of Chicago, Illinois. The fire burned for two days, destroying thousands of buildings and killing an estimated 300 people.

On this day in 1918, during World War I, American soldier Alvin C. York led an attack on a German machine gun nest, capturing 132 German soldiers. His heroism earned him the Medal of Honor and made him one of the most celebrated American soldiers of the war.

On this day in 1956, Don Larsen of the New York Yankees pitched the only perfect game in World Series history, leading his team to a 2-0 victory over the Brooklyn Dodgers in Game 5 of the series.
