On This Day | October 27

On this day in 1904, the New York City Subway opened its first line, running from City Hall to 145th Street in Manhattan. The subway system has since become one of the largest and busiest in the world, transforming urban transportation.

On this day in 1962, the Cuban Missile Crisis reached its most dangerous moment, known as “Black Saturday.” An American U-2 spy plane was shot down over Cuba, heightening tensions between the U.S. and Soviet Union. Behind the scenes, frantic diplomacy took place to prevent nuclear war. The crisis began to ease when Soviet Premier Khrushchev agreed to remove missiles from Cuba in exchange for a U.S. pledge not to invade the island.

On this day in 1994, the United States and North Korea signed the Agreed Framework, aimed at freezing North Korea’s nuclear weapons program in exchange for aid in building two light-water nuclear reactors. The agreement marked a significant attempt to address nuclear proliferation on the Korean Peninsula.

An Early Call & Concept for Flood Protection

Mr. Kennedy in his report recommended that the solution of the flood problem be the construction of an artificial channel thru a series of lakes in north Minot. The estimated cost of the suggested channel would be $1,200,000 and it would take three years to complete it, the state engineer said.

Why We Chose It

Our own time is in the middle of yet another flood protection effort, as the efforts of the past fell short of what the Souris River delivered. We are paying a price for it today, but hopefully we are the generation that solve this problem for the rest of Minot’s future.
