Not Afraid of a Lawsuit
“The Minot ordinance is patterned after the one at Portland, Ore., which has stood the test of the highest courts.”
The Ward County Independent, October 23, 1924
Why We Chose It
Leaders of Minot’s past are reminding us of a valuable lesson — when you’re community is at stake and you believe you’re in the right, you shouldn’t be afraid of a fight.. And the fight they were fighting — protecting local merchants from unscrupulous outside agents. It is a debate still present in our communities today.
Celebrating North Dakota’s Son
“And so he was called from one place to another until he at length stood as the Chief Executive of the nation, from the log cabin which we are glad to call ours to the White House. No other state has such a trophy. No other state had such an influence on the life of Theodore Roosevelt. We are proud to call him North Dakota’s son.”
The Ward County Independent, October 23, 1919
Why We Chose It
It was only a year after his passing and already our love affair had begun. Teddy Roosevelt features regularly in the news of the past — as he still does today.
Where Will They Buy?
“And the people of North Dakota, in the main, would rather do business with the North Dakota businessmen than with an outside concern which does not help support the cities, the counties and the state. Money that goes out to a mail order house is money lost to North Dakota.”
The Ward County Independent, October 23, 1924
Why We Chose It
Supporting the local economy has been at the beginning and end of many eras in Minot’s history. Today’s column as well. And the lesson is the same. Money that goes out is lost to North Dakota and our communities.
