Why We Chose It

We’d do well to remember that the freedoms and privileges we enjoy today were fought for by those that came before us. This is proof. It was not always legal for women to vote in North Dakota. It was those pesky progressives and a majority of voters from a 110 years ago that delivered this equality into North Dakota.

County Physician Closes Schools & Churches

“Small Pox at Berthold. Dr. Ransom, county physician, ordered the schools, churches and all other public places at Berthold closed. There are several cases of small pox in two families.”

The Ward County Independent, October 22, 1914

Why We Chose It

In the old days, it seems we didn’t bat an eye at letting the health official close down our schools, our churches, and public gathering places. The news of this was no more than a passing blurb in a sea of thousands of words weekly.

What have we forgotten that has turned some among us so rabidly against protecting citizens from unseen public health threats?

My Auto Tis of The

My auto, ’tis of thee, short cut to poverty—of thee I chant. I blew a pile of dough on you two years ago, and now you refuse to go, or won’t, or can’t. Thru town and countryside, you were my joy and pride; a happy day. I loved thy gaudy hue, thy nice white tires so new, but now you’re down and out for true, in every way. To thee, old rattle box, came many bumps and knocks; for thee I grieve. Badly thy top is torn, frayed are thy seats and worn; the whooping cough affects thy horn, I do believe. Thy perfume swells the breeze while good folks choke and wheeze as we pass by. I paid for thee a price ‘twould buy a mansion twice, now everybody’s yelling “ice”—I wonder why? Thy poor motor has the grippe, thy spark plug has the pip, and woe is thine. I too have suffered chills, ague and kindred ills, endeavoring to pay my bills, since thou wert mine. Gone is my bank roll now. No more ‘twould choke a cow, as once before. Yet if I had the mon, so help me John—amen, I’d buy myself a car again, and speed some more.

Why We Chose It

Few things cost us more in our communities — Minot included — than our unwavering and often hidden subsidies of our cars and trucks. But back when the car was new, this seemed — at least to our local editor — as something worth a little light-hearted questioning.
