The Scars of War and Our Responsibility

A TREE IN NO MAN’S LAND.
A dream? Or was it truth?—I found
a place
That thrice a desert was; where not
a trace
Of human care or occupation re-
mained;
But here and there the mangled sod
was stained
With trodden poppy or strange crim-
son flower
Shot up from drench of blood in re-
cent hour!
Charred grasses tufted many a crum-
bling verge
Whereon my risky footsteps I did
urge;
And there, in passing haste, a branch
I broke
From one wry, leafless branch of tree—
that spoke,
And with lamenting filled the deso-
late air,
Which thence took on a deeper, dark
despair.

So, once, in Underlands of Night, it
chanced,
At a like cry the Tuscan stood en-
tranced—
Yet different, too, for this poor rifted
tree
Held not a spirit doomed by stern de-
cree
For evil wrought in life. But, sweet
and faint,
Then stronger growing, came its re-
quiem plaint,
That, had it been in words that hu-
man are,
Had run like this: “Thou comest from
afar
Dread things to learn. But I, though
stricken down,
And not again to wear my leafy
crown,
Or pleasant shade for man and beast
afford,
Mourn not my death, but theirs, the
lean, bright sword
Devours ere they have touched their
goodly prime,
Leaving great dearth of them for af-
tertime.”

“O Tree!” I cried, “lament for them—
lament!
Tears are their due! Yet, know that
these have sent
Miraculous heritage to afterdays.
Though in the flesh no more they
walk our ways,
They live! Ay, they the quick, and we
the dead,
Unless their deeds New Life in us
have bred.
Redemptory, for man’s sake have they
died—
Their plea for us—it shall not be de-
nied!”

With this was gone the rifted tree—
the plain—
And I from No Man’s Land was home
again.
