A Beverage of Moderation

“And naturally, the Brewing Industry is proud of the good living it provides for so many folks in North Dakota . . . for the employees of the Brewing Industry itself and for the farmers who supply an important natural ingredient—premium malting barley. In North Dakota, beer belongs—enjoy it.”

The Ward County Independent, November 7, 1963

Why We Chose It

We’ve written before that Beer is one of North Dakota’s largest value-added agriculture opportunities. It’s a shame we drink so little of what’s actually brewed here. Instead we opt more for the brands and varieties that less often lead to moderation. And if you haven’t been to Atypical Brewing, they sell 5-ounce tasters with styles and flavors more akin to a culinary experience than raw consumption.

There’s Nothing to Do Here

“This question is constantly being asked by some young people of their parents, their clergymen, the local civic club or the City Council. As a matter of fact we refer to an unsigned letter received by the Mayor of Killdeer. Unknown Teenagers is the signature used by the writer. We presume whoever they are, the Unknown Teenagers are probably high school students.”

“So in an effort to see what there was to do for a teenager around Killdeer during the school year, we asked that two high school students give us a list of the activities in which they participate.”

The Ward County Independent, November 7, 1963

Why We Chose It

How many times has this phrase been spoken? Well, we have here a first publicly published acknowledgement of it, and we can now confirm this a generations-old challenge of life on the Northern plains. The Killdeer newspaper attempted to counter the argument with a list of two students “doings.” Their rebuttal did not settle the question.
