Let’s Keep Vacationers in North Dakota

“If some capitalist or state government will only develop a fancy hotel or motel resort area in the Turtle Mountains or anywhere else in North Dakota, it will be one of the greatest assets the state has ever had, for it will keep North Dakota vacationists at home and allow us to keep here some of the out-of-state tourists who would otherwise pass through to Montana or Minnesota.”

Why We Chose It

The editorial angle is present — The Ward County Independent was unquestionably — is always for the “place.” The success of the place resulted in the success of the people, and the paper was constantly putting forward this place improving ideas. Even if they didn’t fully come to fruition.

No Laughing Matter

“THIS IS NO LAUGHING MAT-ter; it is no joke to me,” said Abe Wallace, proprietor of an off-sale liquor establishment in Fargo, in requesting the Fargo city commission to take action on his request for an on-sale liquor license. He said the commission is treating his request too lightly, that Fargo’s growth merits more such licenses since the limit now in effect was set in 1936, and he wonders whether there is a liquor monopoly in the city and whether the commission is protecting present license holders.

Why We Chose It

Though this is from Fargo, it’s probably — based on the way communities adopt ordinances — that Minot’s restricted liquor licensing system dates to the same era. And while it’s being questioned once again and possibly reformed, it’s worth noting for exactly how long communities have been having this conversation. Hopefully we make some progress on this go around.
