On this day in 1903, Panama declared its independence from Colombia with the support of the United States. This event paved the way for the construction of the Panama Canal, a crucial waterway for global maritime trade.

On this day in 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 2, carrying the first living creature into space, a dog named Laika. Although Laika did not survive the mission, her journey marked a significant milestone in space exploration.

On this day in 1964, residents of Washington, D.C., were allowed to vote in a presidential election for the first time, following the ratification of the 23rd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. This granted the district representation in the Electoral College.
