On this day in 1889, North Dakota and South Dakota were admitted to the United States as the 39th and 40th states, respectively. Their admission marked a significant expansion of the Union during a period of rapid growth and development.
On this day in 1947, Howard Hughes piloted the Hughes H-4 Hercules, also known as the “Spruce Goose,” on its first and only flight. The massive wooden flying boat was the largest aircraft ever built at the time, but it never went into production.
On this day in 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed a bill establishing Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a federal holiday in the United States. The holiday honors the civil rights leader’s contributions to the fight for racial equality and justice.
