On this day in 1512, the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, painted by Michelangelo, was exhibited to the public for the first time in the Vatican. The masterpiece, depicting scenes from the Book of Genesis, became one of the most renowned works of art in history.
On this day in 1800, President John Adams became the first U.S. president to live in the White House in Washington, D.C. His move marked the completion of the building and established it as the official residence of the President of the United States.
On this day in 1848, the first women’s medical school, the Boston Female Medical School (later merged with Boston University School of Medicine), opened in Massachusetts. This institution marked a significant step toward gender equality in the medical profession.

A Fate Worse Than Property Taxes?
“The federal government stepped forward Saturday to give North Dakota rural schools the needed assurance that it would pay salaries of teachers for the next three months.”
The Ward County Independent, November 1, 1934
Why We Chose It
Measure 4 supporters are against property taxes. But how do they feel about being beholden to the Federal government for a bail out? One of the times North Dakota ran out of money, that’s exactly what happened.
Flood Control is Possible, Also Naive
“The contemplated plan now is to build a series of dams, beginning at or near the Parker ranch 30 miles northwest of Minot, and extending for several miles northwest of there. These dams would provide for a series of lakes for resting grounds for wild ducks and other migratory birds.”
The Ward County Independent, November 1, 1934
Why We Chose It
This plan became. One of these dams is with us today and it makes a place we like to play and call Darling. But the notion that the dam would “insure control of the highest flood waters” proved naive.
When It’s Hard to Do Right
“Probably at no time in the history of the state has there been such a determined effort to secure control of the Supreme Court and subject it to political influences as today. This is the time for the voters to rebuke emphatically any such attempt. No one can say that they are not being influenced by politics.”
The Ward County Independent, November 1, 1934
Why We Chose It
Well, doesn’t this sound familiar. Every time we think we’re the first Americans dealing with a particular challenge, history’s diaries go and show us something otherwise. Also, one of the sections we didn’t include in the highlight above is equally remarkable: “It is comparatively easy for officials to do right when everyone around is in harmony with them; but the testing time for judges comes in the time of excitement and passion. It is then you need judges who will stand firm and do right: who administer justice as they should be without reference to outside influences.”
