On this day in 1773, the Boston Tea Party took place as American colonists, protesting British taxation without representation, boarded British ships and dumped 342 chests of tea into Boston Harbor, an event that escalated tensions leading to the American Revolution.

On this day in 1811, a series of powerful earthquakes began near the town of New Madrid in the Mississippi River Valley, causing widespread destruction and altering the course of the river. The New Madrid earthquakes are among the most significant seismic events in U.S. history.

On this day in 1944, the Battle of the Bulge, the last major German offensive campaign on the Western Front during World War II, began. The surprise attack aimed to split Allied forces and capture the Belgian port of Antwerp, but ultimately failed after intense fighting.
