In Verse: We Are Not The Means Of Grace

Bruce Cockburn–“Mystery”

I will sing my prayers and songs, learn to bake and eat the shepherd’s humble pie

something happens every day at dusk from October through the winter months
a great rose blossoms, tints the sky until the deeper dark
for years and more I’ve watched it come and wait for truth that is not found down
here on Middle Earth

sisters and brothers, we are still here
I ask you, please, stay with me now

2 deer
4 mail boxes
the wall of bare lilac bushes
just across the road

we are not the means of Grace
we are not God’s Sacraments
water, bread and wine
we bath and drink and carry
sacramental seasons in our bones

the sacraments are in the rose itself
