Here in North Dakota, everyone knew who was going to win our state and everyone knew why — Hillary Clinton represented policies that were bad for our state on many different fronts. For us, she was a non-starter because of the issues that matter here. But for many across the country, it was exactly the opposite. The rhetoric and demeanor of Mr. Trump brought forth equally fierce opposition.
All of it spoke to a country deeply divided, and it wasn’t just on the candidates on the top of those tickets, but on the issues and ideals they represented. Here in little old largely-homogenous North Dakota, it’s easy for us to lose sight of that because we all think alike. That’s why Dave Chappelle’s opening monolog from last night’s Saturday Night Live is worth watching. He reminds us of a what it’s like to have a different take on the world and the state of our country, and he does it with humor so maybe we have a better chance at hearing it.
