On this day, the end of World War I led to lasting observance. Elsewhere in the world, the struggle for independence began. In Minot, our editor had a poem for the occasion. The police chief was being checked, and conventioneers were in town and that was good for business.

On this day, the Nazis had finally gained power and they begin doing what they did. New York blacked out, a wall fell, a war ended. In Minot, our editor's wisdom was on full display, the Soo Line Railroad was busy building one of our newest restaurants, and the ND Supreme Court was swatting Ward County and setting some taxing precedents.

On this day we got our first good look at a closed fracture. Hitler failed to take over and was later charged with treason, and in the U.S. a four-term President was elected for the first time. Locally, our editor was commenting on the challenges that come with immigration, politicians who were buying the news so they could publish the "truth", and perils of imposing a high license fee on entertainment.

On this day we saw lots of election firsts. In Russia, a new regime took the offices. Locally, an early example of "There's nothing to do here" was cause for comment, and the brewer's guild was singing the praises North Dakota's agricultural products and encouraging moderation.

On this day, we elected a President known for his honesty. Gandhi taught us -- like other notable figures from history -- about the effectiveness of non violence, and television and politics and news got their start. In Minot, the Garrison Dam was attractive. Tragedy crossed the center line. And Minot State's reputation for art education got official recognition.

On this day, Remember Remember the 5th of November. Vote. Susan B. Anthony did. And later, a tragic protest. In Minot, the editor was again complimenting those working to keep dollars earned in North Dakota from leaving. A Minot surgeon was advancing cataract surgery, and in Fargo, they were wondering if the liquor licensing ordinance might be a special interest protection racket.

On this day, Howard Carter gave Steve Martin something to sing about. Russia invaded another country, and we did not have peace in the middle east. In Minot, yesterday's pioneer was today's author. The election was over and it was time to get to work. And, the federal government was surveying land for a "Jet Air Base." Locals commented.
