Most people in prison eventually return to society. The question is: what kind of people do we want them to be when they do? This piece — part personal account, part policy critique — explores how truth-in-sentencing laws strip away the very incentives that help people change. Through the story of one man who turned his life around because he had the chance, it makes a powerful case: longer sentences may feel tough, but they often leave us all worse off — less safe, and with more lost potential.

John Leverso is Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice at the University of Cincinnati; he knows the issue intimately and he shares what he’s learned here in this commentary provided to The Conversation. It’s worth also noting, the North Dakota legislature is debating this very topic right now with SB 2128 working it’s way through the bill making process.

SB 2128

A BILL for an Act to amend and reenact sections 12-44.1-01, 12-48.1-01, 12-48.1-02, 12-54.1-01, 12-54.1-03, 12.1-08-02, 12.1-17-01, 12.1-32-02.1, 12.1-32-09.1, and 39-10-71 of the North Dakota Century Code, relating to transparent sentencing of criminal offenders, work release eligibility and conditions for criminal offenders, sentences for assaulting and fleeing from law enforcement officers, and sentences for preventing arrest; to provide a legislative management report; and to provide a penalty.

Minot’s new Economic Development Committee is shifting from listening to leading — and the growing pains are showing. At its latest meeting, members clashed over whether to restore a key city position cut from the budget and wrestled with how to balance business growth with taxpayer expectations. Child care shortages emerged as a major barrier to workforce stability, prompting calls for creative solutions. It’s early days, but the committee’s work is already surfacing the tough tradeoffs behind a stronger, more resilient local economy.

For the full report, this article from The Dakotan has a good recap of Friday’s debate.

Ten seasons, a national title, and five conference championships — Brad Berry’s run as head coach of UND men’s hockey was anything but ordinary. But after missing the NCAA tournament again, the program is turning the page. Berry exits with one of the best winning percentages in the nation, yet recent near-misses began to overshadow past triumphs. Now, with a strong roster and the transfer portal about to open, UND faces a familiar but high-stakes challenge: finding the right leader, and doing it fast.

Brad Elliott Schlossman has the full story on turning the page in one of North Dakota’s most storied athletic programs.

Canada’s political landscape is shifting fast — and the race to lead the country through rising global tensions and domestic pressures is officially on. With an election set for April 28, new Liberal leader Mark Carney faces off against a confident Pierre Poilievre and a vocal Jagmeet Singh, all staking claims on the economy, health care, and Canada’s place in a world reshaped by Trump’s return. The campaign begins not with fanfare, but with urgency — and high stakes for what comes next.

For two decades, Alex Ovechkin has been chasing greatness — and now, he’s within seven goals of hockey’s most unbreakable record. The number 895 hangs over every Capitals game like a countdown, drawing fans, legends, and history itself into the arena. What’s unfolding isn’t just about stats or legacy — it’s about endurance, identity, and a player who’s refused to slow down, even as time and age pressed in. This is the final stretch of a story few believed was possible.

For the full story on Alex Ovechkin’s pursuit of the Great One’s goal record, this story from NPR ties together the full depth of the moment.

When a community fails to see its most vulnerable children, someone has to step forward and refuse to look away. This deeply personal commentary doesn’t just describe North Dakota’s legislative battles — it lays bare what’s at stake: the lives of kids like Chance and Nex, who needed care more than politics. Through grief, exhaustion, and hard-won hope, Faye Seidler writing for the North Dakota Monitor offers more than a critique. It’s a call to protect, to listen, and to build a state where no child feels invisible — or alone.

On This Day

On this day we were marveling at advances in medical science, Hitler was dismantling a republic, and NATO was fighting back against the ugliest side of human nature. In Minot, we were still buying local, trees were so good at making the place beautiful they were in the news twice, but we were “Max”ed out on rabbits 😉

On this day in 1882, German physician Robert Koch announced the discovery of the bacterium responsible for tuberculosis, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, a groundbreaking achievement in medical science that paved the way for better diagnosis and treatment of the disease.

On this day in 1933, the German Reichstag passed the Enabling Act, granting Adolf Hitler dictatorial powers and effectively dismantling the Weimar Republic, marking a significant step in the establishment of the Nazi regime.

On this day in 1999, NATO launched airstrikes against Yugoslavia in response to the humanitarian crisis and ethnic cleansing in Kosovo, marking the beginning of the Kosovo War and a significant intervention in the Balkans conflict.

A large crowd attended the debate Tuesday night, which was on the question of farm aid legislation thru means of an "equalization fee." Minot had the negative of the question, and will also have the negative in the clash with Leeds.

Why we published it: Debate teams "Clashing", large crowds showing up to hear arguments... Is it possible this was some alternate timeline that got switched? 🙂 Would it be possible to capture some of this back?

Petitions for eight candidates for three positions in the city election have been filed with the city auditor. The city election takes place on Tuesday, April 5. Four candidates are up for two city commissioner offices. They are E. J. Thomas and V. A. Corbett, incumbents, and Nap La Fleur and E. B. McCutcheon. For Police Magistrate, C. N. Cox, incumbent, is a candidate to succeed himself, while his opponents are John Lynch, a former magistrate, and Isaac Johnson.

Why we published it: For baseball fans, there's a familiar name in that list. Also, candidates are a sign of a healthy government. #MakeMinot 😉

Beautification and the increasing in value through the planting of trees on farms of Ward county situated on the main highways is one of the aims of the Minot Association of Commerce for the coming year.

Why we published it: The Chamber of Commerce working dutifully on beautifying Minot and Ward County... we have good role models to look back on!

The Tree committee of the Association of Commerce met Tuesday morning to make preliminary plans for a campaign which it is hoped will result in numerous shelter belts around farm homes along the state federal highways in Ward county.

Why we published it: Twice in the same edition our editor was pushing trees on us. We should assume by the attention that mattered more than a little.

The Snake Creek Township held a jack rabbit drive in their district last Sunday and brought in about 400. There was a jack rabbit drive held in the Gassman district last Sunday and they got about 700 but they only picked up 500. This will be the last drive for the season.

Why we published it: Shared because of a community tradition of a bygone era that we might raise an eyebrow at today. But we can presume that the number of rabbits was more than a small nuisance if numbers like this were turning out and turning up.

Then we, as a community, will have the benefit of our own money for the general prosperity and advancement of our own city.

Why we published it: The degree to which this was a theme -- buy local -- can only be appreciated if you fully immerse yourself in the news of the day. It. Was. Everywhere. We'd do well to learn from this moment when Minot's economy was in full "Magic" mode.
