On This Day | Awaken Tax Payers!

Perhaps the City is now being operated as economically as possible. Perhaps we are paying for things which we have bought in the past which we might have managed to get along without. Perhaps we bought a grand piano when we ought to have been satisfied with [less]. We cannot remedy conditions over expenditures already made, but we believe that tax payers should take more interest in future expenditures. They should study conditions, learn why taxes are high and use their influence in seeing that not a dollar is expended needlessly in the future until some relief is in sight.

The Ward County Independent, December 6, 1923

Why We Chose It

First, the [less] originally contained an ethnically derogatory phrase. As a society, we’ve learned better, and it’s important not to perpetuate the mistakes of the past.

Second, when it comes to taxes and housing, there’s a lot to unpack. Taxes used to be much higher, but homes were worth significantly less. If we’re serious about fixing these issues, we need to figure out how we got here. Stories like this from the past provide valuable reference points and context for understanding where we came from.
