S. merchant marines was killed in an explosion of two munitions ships at Port Chicago, Cal, last July 17, has been chosen to serve as sponsor and representative of the city of Minot when a new Victory ship, to be named the S. S. Minot Victory, is launched at Portland, Ore., Dec. 11.”

Why We Chose It
It’s both a somber reminder of the sacrifices that have been made for our country from within our community; it’s also a point of pride, the commissioning of a ship that supported the war effort. The S.S. Minot Victory was commissioned February 1, 1945 and served the U.S. Merchant Navy in World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam.
