Why We Chose It
If you’re a regular reader, you can afford to take special pains to tell those businesses you want to hear from to advertise here. Nothing helps a paper more than readers who engage with the businesses whose advertising they want to see and whose dollars they support.
Also, don’t neglect to read below. Every one of these editorial vignettes is relevant if not even critically important still today.

Why We Chose It
Those thirty men knew what they were doing. 115 years later and that building stands proud and only feet from numerous trains that pass daily. Today, it’s a great place to grab a bite or watch a Bison game.
Also noteworthy, the article contained a quote from the contractor that used an overtly racist simile. Language like this is not uncommon in old news articles, and it teaches us that many things that were once accepted are no longer. The loss of this language is not something we need to feel nostalgic for.
Ward County’s Arbitrary Taxation Swatted By Supreme Court
“The Independent long ago pointed out that the commissioners had been exceeding their authority, as they do in a great many instances, but it remained for the supreme court to give them the jolt that they so richly deserved.”
The Ward County Independent, November 9, 1911
Why We Chose It
The tax system by which we assess property and fund our local institutions was not simply created. It was formed. It is due for another leap of evolution and improvement.
