A Poor City Indeed Without Her Entertainments
The City Council Monday night decided to raise the opera house license from 50 cents for each entertainment to $5. The Independent can hardly agree with our city fathers in this. Minot, without her entertainments, would be a very poor city indeed, and it is no more than right that the license should be wiped out entirely. This is a good way of tearing down instead of building up our city.
The Ward County Independent, November 8, 1905
Why We Chose It
A high licensing fee is a good way of tearing down a city instead of building it up. Does this strike a chord of current relevance with you? It should. City Council is again debating this very principle with regards to liquor licensing more than 120 years later.
Politicians Buys Some Good News
Because Roswell L. Wood, Mayor of Haverhill, Mass., could not induce the only daily paper of his city to say a kind word for him occasionally, he started a new paper, the Haverhill Truth, and each day his picture appears on the front page together with a history of his noble acts. Wood may have gotten his cue from Mayor Roach, of Minot.
The Ward County Independent, November 8, 1905
Why We Chose It
First, a great vignette of Roosevelt’s charisma. Second, it seems the news and politicians have often been at odds with each other. Third, the hard realities of “buy local” campaigns and a call to the responsibility of the merchants to compete (and advertise) and win against the mail order houses.
The Immigration Problem
H. Metcalf, secretary of commerce and labor, holds that the immigration problem is the most serious that faces the country, its chief difficulty being the question of distribution. Recently he received a letter from Louisiana saying that state alone can give employment to 100,000 workers in the field. The western portion of the Mississippi valley stands in equal need, but concentration in the cities goes on steadily.”
The Ward County Independent, November 8, 1905
Why We Chose It
Immigration remains a central issue in American culture and politics. Let them in, keep them out, and then it was send them to Louisiana where they desperately need labor. It goes to show the challenges created by immigration are not shared equally across the fifty states. No wonder it’s a hard issue to solve politically.
